- Title
ROWAN WILLIAMS ON SHARĪ'A, SECULARISM, AND SURPRISE.
- Authors
Daniels, Joel C.
- Abstract
Rowan Williams's 2008 lecture, "Civil and Religious Law in England," caused a furor because of his suggestion that Islamic sharī'a law, administered by sharī'a courts, should have a role in English civil law. This essay focuses on the theological commitments that led Williams to make his proposal, which come directly from a specific understanding of Christian orthodoxy as reflecting an openness to innovation. He sees discussions of faith in the secular public square as potentially transformative engagement, in which religious communities can be made stronger and more robust through interaction with members of other traditions.
