Sobhani, Mary A.
- Abstract
The article analyzes the depiction of religion, fanaticism and magic in the 2011 novel "Queen of America" by Luis Alberto Urrea. Topics discussed include the role of the life of folk-saint Teresita Urrea as the basis of the novel, emphasis of the novel on the hardship experienced by the protagonist instead of on her success and fame in the U.S., and the delinking of religion from projects of power and rejection of fanatical thought in the narrative.
