- Abstract
The bark of Diospyrous malbarica Kostel. was undertaken for evaluation of antidiarrhoeal activity in albino mice based on ethnobotanical lead. This bark was collected from our college campus area, Malegaon, Baramati. The methanol extract of bark of Diospyrous malbarica Kostel. was screened for its anti-diarrhoeal activity against castor oil, magnesium sulphate, prostaglandin E2 induced diarrhoea and gastrointestinal motility test. The methanol extract showed anti-diarrhoeal activity against castor oil, magnesium sulphate, prostaglandin E2 induced diarrhoea model by reducing total number of faeces, number of wet faeces and total weight of wet faeces as well as extract increased the time elapsed between the administration of the cathartic agent and the excretion of the first diarrhoeic faeces. In gastrointestinal motility test extract reduced distance traveled by charcoal plug as an indication of reduction of intestinal motility. All the effects of extract in different diarrhoeal models are dose dependent.
