- Abstract
Gingival reactive hyperplasias are localized benign enlargements of gingival tissues, especially those interdental, being more common in the upper jaw compared to the mandible. They are predominantly hyperplastic lesions of gingival connective tissue which develop as a result of chronic irritation. The aim of this study is to present the minimally invasive treatment of reactive fibrous hyperplasia with diode laser and to evaluate the result of lesion photocoagulation and the obtained aesthetic result. Material and method: This study involved 12 patients who complained of esthetic problems caused by the presence of localized papillary outgrowth in anterior teeth. At the clinical intraoral examination it was found a firm, pink and non-inflamed mass under the free gingival margin, in the interdental papilla. It was decided the complete removal of reactive lesions using the Epic laser from Biolase, through a minimally invasive approach. Results: It was necessary only one laser session performed under contact anesthesia, followed by the formation of a small crust which was eliminated in a few days. It was not necessary to administer postsurgery antiinflammatory or analgesic medication. One month after surgery, papilla returned to normal size and appearance, no tissue contraction was found. Patients reported no recurrence of tissue outgrowth at 3-6 months and 1 year after the intervention. Conclusions: The diode laser used in this study was an efficient choice. Treatment success was due to positive mental approach and intraoperative good cooperation of patient. Asymptomatic post-operative healing led to a better acceptance of the treatment by the patient.
