- Abstract
Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus is one of the most common complications in pregnant women and is associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes in the short and long term. The most common therapy used has been insulin, however the use of metformin is listed as an alternative treatment. Objectives: To collect and analyze the evidence available until now on the use of metformin for gestational diabetes mellitus. Materials and methods: A descriptive narrative review of articles found in databases and journals of interest was carried out. As a selection criterion, a time limit of 5 years was considered. From the total of references found, 20 articles of interest were selected: 10 systematic reviews and metaanalyzes, 7 clinical trials and 3 meta-analyzes. Conclusions: The analyzed evidence provides various approaches related to the use of oral infant therapy, important metformin, in contrast to insulin, evidencing the maternal, neonatal and medium-term parameters that are affected. It is concluded through the conjunction of data that metformin is a safe drug during pregnancy that has a lower incidence of complications and possible beneficial effects. Other drugs such as glibenclamide are not recommended due to conflicts regarding their use due to poor performance and lower safety. Prospective studies are needed to evaluate the long-term effects on the offspring of women subjected to the various existing regimens.
