- Abstract
The film industry constitutes one of our basic referents when discussing the value system of an era. At the same time, it is one of the most powerful elements for educating and modifying this value system and, thus, people's lifestyles. Hence, we can see the importance of what movies have to say about one of the central manifestations of the so-called post-modernity: the identity crisis. If this theme is recurrent in films the world over, it is even more so in those that are made by females, since, historically and socially, the participation of women in cinema has always been restricted even with respect to the images of them. We propose to analyze how one author (Isabel Coixet) presents the identity crisis of the female subject at the end of the 20th century in the film My Life Without Me (2003). This movie is interesting for our study because it is both an independent and auteur production; moreover, it links us to the social context in which we carry out our teaching and investigative work. The movie is based on the short story "Pretending a bed is a raft" (1997) by Nanci Kincaid, (USA), so we will also analyze the relationship between both works.
