- Abstract
There are few studies of high-mountain birds in Colombia. In this study we characterize the avifauna in the páramo and superpáramo in the Lagunillas Valley sector of El Cocuy National Natural Park (Boyacá, Colombia). We obtained data on the relative abundance, density, elevational distribution, and organization in trophic guilds of species during observations and auditory censuses in 22 1-km-long transects, covering an approximate area of 36 km2 from 3750 to 4075 m elevation. We recorded 45 species of birds distributed in 15 families and 14 trophic guilds. The best-represented families were associated with the most abundant resources in this ecosystem: nectar, seeds and insects. We recorded four species not previously reported in the páramo ecosystem, thereby extending their elevational distributions. We also observed species threatened in Colombia, including Cistothorus apolinari and Vultur gryphus.
