- Abstract
Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the most important public health problems, being one of the main causes of morbidity, disability and mortality. Cardiac surgery has a strong impact from a psycho-emotional point of view and on the person's approach to daily activities. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a path that actively involves the client and aims to meet his needs to ensure a return home consistent with his expectations and potential. The purpose of the paper is to identify which are the best nursing strategies to recognize and meet the educational needs of the cardiac surgery patient in the rehabilitation phase and describe which aspects to be considered as priorities in the person's educational approach. Materials and methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted from March to August 2020 by consulting the PubMed and CINAHL database. 23 articles were included in the review. Results: Three main themes were identified from the analysis of the materials and to conceptually organize the results: nursing strategies useful for recognizing educational needs, including the interview and self-report questionnaires; nursing strategies aimed at satisfying the aforementioned needs, also involving the caregiver; the aspects to be taken into consideration in the assisted person's educational approach, including age and gender. Discussion: The results obtained emphasize how the rehabilitation phase and the education addressed to the nurse must include the use of several strategies for identifying the educational need, the active involvement of a caregiver but above all the drafting of a care plan that can be consistent with the person's expectations and shared by the nursing teams in the various settings. Conclusions: The literature found made it possible to answer the research questions that guided the drafting of the paper and highlighted how a continuum of assistance in the various care settings facilitates the resumption of the subject's daily life.
