- Abstract
This article discusses the emergence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, specifically focusing on Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains that are resistant to broad-spectrum cephalosporins. The study examines a particular E. coli strain isolated from a patient in Switzerland and investigates the mechanisms behind its resistance. The researchers found that the resistance was not due to common mechanisms such as β-lactamases, but rather a modification in the penicillin-binding-protein 3 (PBP-3) sequence. The study highlights the importance of monitoring and understanding these resistance mechanisms, especially in high-risk multidrug-resistant clones like the one identified in this study.
