Costa Rican Identity and the Stories of Carmen Lyra.
- Authors
González, Ann
- Abstract
The article explores how Carmen Lyra, the pseudonym for María Isabel Carvajal, depicted Costa Rican identity in her collection of stories and folklore for children "Cuentos de mi tía Panchita." It describes how Lyra nationalized the original source material for most of her stories by incorporating Afro-Caribbean stories and elements of indigenous folklore into mainstream Costa Rican literature. It is suggested that Lyra's literary style was aimed at creating a way for Costa Ricans to see themselves in relation to others.
