- Abstract
The article discusses the question of what European music is and to what degree it had evolved autonomously. Thus, the article propagates the view that the European tradition of classical music and its historical development, unlike other forms of Western art, had proven itself less prone to external non Western influences. Nevertheless, the fact that European classical music managed to preserve its unique sound despite the exposure of Europeans to new cultural environments, does not mean that it had not been influenced by the social environment in which it was embedded. Such influences are especially manifest as of the mid-19th century. The article consequently concentrates on the period between 1860 and 1930.
