- Abstract
The article discusses carriage roads in the Shawangunk Mountains of New York State. It examines the roles of developers Alfred H. Smiley and Albert Smiley and Lake Mohonk area landowner John Stokes in building the roads. Other topics include landscape gardening, American attitudes toward nature and conservation, and the roads' design features. The Hudson River School group of painters and writer Andrew Jackson Downing are also examined.
