- Abstract
Sociology's cognitive identity is fragmented. It has been evolving by canonizing its classics. On the one hand, as sociology became established, interpretations of its >classics< as the predecessors of current schools of sociology stabilized the historical identity of the latter. On the other hand, the classics became more important as contemporaries whose works remain current and contribute to die multiplicities of its institutional anchoring. The article argues that in the current condition of >anything goes< in sociology, the discussion of the classics has the capacity to contribute to the renewal of the discipline's cognitive identity, if the classics are being interpreted as pioneers of modes of thought according to historical epistemology.
