- Abstract
The era of Shah Abbas I (996-1038 AH / 1617-1659 AD) is considered one of the significant periods iin the social history and artistic flourishing of the Safavid era in Iran. In this regard, it provides ample richness for examining the social history through the lens of artistic works. Iranian painting, primarily focused on narrative, courtly, or mythological themes, with its short background, reflected aspects of Safavid social life in the paintings of the era of Shah Abbas I and the Isfahan school. Though single-figure painting, or "takngār," had its origins before the Safavids, it was solidified in the works of Reza Abbasi (died 1044 AH / 1634 AD), one of the most important painters of the Isfahan school. This research aims to investigate how Reza Abbasi depicted themes and social classes in his single-figure paintings. The findings of this study indicate that Reza Abbasi, a skillful artist of the Isfahan school, lived among the people beyond his presence at the court and, more than other painters of this period, managed to portray various social classes, genders, occupations, and especially some social behaviors or everyday situations of his time in his single-figure paintings.
