The article reports on the selection of the Hale-akala volcanic summit as the site for the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) prototype telescope by the University of Hawai'i's Institute for Astronomy. Pan-STARRS is a wide-field imaging system that combines relatively small mirrors with very large charge-coupled device cameras to observe the whole sky to at least 24th magnitude several times a month.
