- Title
Israel's Battle Against Free Speech: The Shuttering of Al Jazeera.
- Authors
KAMPMARK, BINOY
- Abstract
This article discusses Israel's decision to shut down the Qatar-backed news station Al Jazeera. The network has been accused by Israeli politicians of being a Hamas front and promoting terrorism. A law was passed in April that allows the Minister of Communication to shut down foreign news outlets deemed a national security threat, and plans were revealed to shutter Al Jazeera's operations in Israel. Critics argue that this move is a populist attempt to please the radical right and suppress freedom of expression. The article also highlights other instances of state repression of free speech in Israel, including crackdowns on Palestinian students and the detainment of a professor for her comments on a podcast.
