- Abstract
Jean Carper's book, "100 Life or Death Foods: A Scientific Guide to Which Foods Prolong Life or Kill You Prematurely," provides evidence-based information on the impact of different foods on longevity. Carper highlights that legumes, whole grains, and nuts can extend lifespan, while refined grains, sugar-sweetened beverages, heavy salt use, and red and processed meats can shorten it. The book also discusses the benefits of the Mediterranean and Dash diets, as well as the importance of getting protein from plants rather than animals. Carper emphasizes the need to return to unprocessed natural foods and organic-certified labels, which can often be more affordable than highly processed alternatives. While genetics, exercise, and other factors also influence life expectancy, Carper argues that individuals have personal control over their food choices. The book is suitable for all ages and provides simple recipes for nutritious and delicious meals.
