- Title
Cashing in on Racist Bail.
- Authors
KOLHATKAR, SONALI
- Abstract
The article discusses the issue of cash bail in the United States and its impact on racial inequality and mass incarceration. Cash bail refers to the practice of requiring individuals who cannot afford to pay the full bail amount to remain in jail indefinitely, while those who can afford it are able to secure their release. The article highlights how Republicans in various states, including Georgia, are rolling back efforts to reform cash bail systems, criminalizing charitable bail funds, and expanding cash bail for new crimes. The author argues that the cash bail system disproportionately affects people of color and perpetuates racial disparities in the criminal justice system. The article also mentions the growing movement to abolish cash bail, with Illinois being the first state to do so. However, the Republican push-back against bail reform is seen as a regressive tactic in the GOP's culture wars. The article concludes by emphasizing the need to confront and expose the expansion of cash bail laws as an attack on Black and Brown communities.
