- Title
Paul Krugman Dismisses the Existence of a Military-Industrial Complex.
- Authors
GOODMAN, MELVIN
- Abstract
In a recent column, economist Paul Krugman argued that the "military-industrial complex" no longer exists, citing a decrease in military spending as a share of the economy. However, the author of this article disagrees, stating that the military-industrial complex is more influential than ever. They point out that global defense spending is around $2.2 trillion, with the United States accounting for half of that amount. The author also highlights the revolving door between the Pentagon and arms manufacturers, the large number of lobbyists in Washington, and the bipartisan support for military spending. They argue that the military-industrial complex drives government expenditures on munitions and maintains bases long after the wars that led to their creation have ended.
