- Abstract
Theoretical medical education in a broad sense can be divided into three major phases: the teaching of theoretical subjects in undergraduate medical education, the academic activities of senior medical students in theoretical medicine, and the academic activities of PhD students in postgraduate training in theoretical institutes. The three phases are characterised by very different prior professional knowledge, life situations, student and teacher/mentor strategies, career goals and attracting alternative forces. All of these result in very different motivations of students and their supervisors/mentors and strategies optimised for the specific situation. However, all three phases are characterised by the need to select students with the greatest motivation, the need to maintain a scientific mindset, to sustain scientific interest, to focus on longer-term career goals, to develop a personal relationship between students and their mentors, and to pursue aspects of internationally recognised scientific excellence. Here I summarise my own views, drawn from many years of intensive experience, on the different characteristics of the three phases and the features which, despite their differences, are fundamental to all three. My summary is inherently subjective and does not necessarily describe strategies to be followed, but I hope that my own experience will be useful to other colleagues in similar situations.
