This study sought to determine the degree of difference among selected modes of upper body strength measurement. College-aged recreational weight trainers (n = 29) performed 1-RM lifts with free weights and two machine weights. It appears that maximal lifting performance in the bench press is contingent on the type of device used for evaluation.
