The article discusses the history of the subscription method used by publishers to guarantee sales prior to creating books in the seventeenth- and eighteenth-centuries in Great Britain and U.S. Topics include the funding of the Library Company of Philadelphia, the 1617 book "Ductor in Linguas" by John Minsheu, the 1688 subscription for an American Bible by William Bradford of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the 1790 advertisement by New York City printers Robert Hodge, Thomas Allen, and Samuel Campbell for an edition of the Bible.
