- Title
Locating "Wissatinnewag" in John Pynchon's Letter of 1663.
- Authors
Bruchac, Margaret; Thomas, Peter
- Abstract
The article identifies the location of the place name Wissatinnewag based on the historic and linguistic context of a letter written by Englishman John Pynchon on July 28, 1663. His aim as chief magistrate of Springfield, Massachusetts is to ensure the safety of English settlements. The only version of the letter was written in Dutch because the English version was destroyed during a 1911 fire in the New York state archives. It suggests that Wissatinnewag was located on the Housatonic River.
