Microfinance loans have been primarily provided for income-generating programs and their use for investment, such as in purchases of gold, has been controversial. New regulations in India prohibit more than 25 percent of microfinance loans being used for nonincome generating purposes. As supported by asset theory, this limit would be counter to the purposes of microfinance: poverty alleviation and empowerment.
