- Title
Hopkins and Tractarianism.
- Authors
Groves, Peter
- Abstract
The article discusses the influence of Tractarianism on the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins. Recent scholarship on Hopkins has connected him with the theology of John Keble, Edward Pusey and Henry Liddon. The article concludes that Hopkins used the divisions in the Anglican Church resulting from the Tractarian movement as a means of rebellion from which he also drew poetic influence. His involvement in the movement was one of his first steps towards the Catholic Church.
