- Authors
Lo, Lusa
- Abstract
The article discusses strategies for individualized education program (IEP) meetings in cases where a child in U.S. special education comes from a diverse background. The author comments on the legal background of IEP meetings which are mandated by the U.S. Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004. The strategies center around participation of parents from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families. The author looks at cross-cultural communication between parents and teachers, cross-cultural differences in the organization of IEP meetings, and the importance of clear communication about the time commitment of the meetings. Also presented are two parents' experiences of IEP meetings.
