- Authors
SAIKAL, AMIN
- Abstract
In this article the author focuses on the ultra orthodox Sunni Islamic Taliban militia that takeover Kabul, Afghanistan in mid 1996, has confronted the neighbouring Islamic Republic of Iran with serious dilemmas and challenges. He discusses Iran's policy towards Afghanistan, that was ambiguous since the Soviet invasion of the country in late December 1979. He also states that Iran pursued a policy of caution even towards the mujahideen group with which it had much in common linguistically and culturally. He also states that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had promoted Gulbiddin Hekmatyar's Hezbi Islami Afghanistan as the largest mujahideen group and given it the lion's share of outside military and non-military aid.
