- Abstract
This study deals with the critical analysis and translation of Risâle fi Madhab Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā'a by Shams al-Dīn al-Samarqandī (d. 722/1323), one of the later theologians. This study was not published before and is an obscure and little-known aqāid text. A critical edition of the treatise was carried out on three copies. With this study, another missing link in Samarqandī's scholarly heritage has been uncovered. This study consists of three main parts; the first part introduces Samarqandī's life, scholarly identity, and works. Then, with this study, the determination of the name of the treatise, the proof of the authorship of the work, the examination of some critical issues related to Samarqandī's life, the analysis and evaluation of the text, and the introduction of the copies of the treatise were carried out. The second part of the study includes the critical edition of the treatise, and the third part contains the Turkish translation of the text. It is seen that al-Samarqandī presents the beliefs of the Ahl al-Sunnah concisely in the treatise, which is very similar in content to al-Mu'takad. Although the treatise is an aqāid text, it reflects the language and content of the later theological texts. The topics in the text begin with the phrase "el-mesele". Each issue of the treatise, which deals with twenty-nine topics in total, is linked to the previous and the subsequent discussion. In this respect, the work has a very systematic structure. It has been determined that Samarqandī dedicated this treatise to Asil al-Dīn Hasan, the son of Nasir al-Dīn al-Tusi. In addition to the effects of the Ilkhanid state policy on intellectual life, the study also explores some of the relations that Samarqandī established with the Ilkhanid state officials during his stay in Tabriz. In the study, the meaning that al-Samarqandī attributed to the concept of Ahl al-Sunnah is investigated. Also, it is explained that how he saw Ahl al-Sunnah as a community that had come together around certain principles since the time of Companions. According to him, Ahl al-Sunnah is an umbrella concept that includes elements such as salaf scholars, Ash'arites, and Hanafi-Māturīdī school. Samarqandī declared the theological principles of Ahl al-Sunnah and tried not to include the controversial issues between the Ash'arites and the Māturīdīs in this treatise. In this context, a new proposal was made by pointing to the debates about the sectarian identity of Samarqandī, known as a Māturīdī scholar. It was claimed that it was incorrect to attribute Samarqandī to the Māturīdiyya sect because he did not position himself within a school. Although he made explanations parallel to the views of the Māturīdī sect in most of the controversial issues between the two Sunnī schools, it is seen that al-Samarqandī endeavored to use an inclusive language centered on Ahl al-Sunnah. This work can be regarded as a document of his stance on this issue.
