- Abstract
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of Georges François Reuter (1805-1872), the authors pay tribute to this figure of 19th century Geneva botanical science. His life and career are detailed here by using existing sources and by carrying out research in the archives of the Conservatory and Botanical Gardens of the City of Geneva (CJBG) and the Library of Geneva (BGE). Indeed, the recent donation of the archives of the descendants of G. F. Reuter to the BGE has made it possible to discover unpublished documents and to provide an answer to some questions that have remained unanswered until today. It turns out that G. F. Reuter, through his works, his functions and his activities, played a key role in scientific life in Geneva and in the rise of botany in the middle of the 19th century. For example, between 1842 and 1884 he contributed to the publication of 515 new taxa, alone or as co-author with his great friend, Edmond Boissier. His life, which remained logically in the shadow of the famous great botanists of his time, was almost entirely dedicated to his passion for botany and his botanist friends: it deserves to be better known.
