- Abstract
The article provides insights into the socio-political culture of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia against the landscape of transformation that has characterized the city since the late 1800s. This is explored particularly during the period of transition from the Derg Socialist oriented military junta (1974-1991) to a city governed by a post communist, free market regime. It also highlights the public culture of billboards, signs and symbols that represent various aspects of the new regime that serves as a heuristic device for residents to cope with daily life.
