- Abstract
Due to the destructive effects of physical diseases, including sickle cell disease, on mental health of individuals and their families and lack of psychological care, teaching cognitive-behavioral interventions is very important in order to improve the function of families to increase their mental health. In most studies on this topic, different suggestions have been provided for the possible improvement of the status of children with sickle cell disease and their families have been less paid attention. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effects of cognitive- behavioral family therapy on the mental health of these families. This study is quasi-experimental research. 20 families having a child with sickle cell disease and admitted two clinics in Marvdasht City, were selected as samples in 2016 using convenience sampling method. The data required was gathered using Family Assessment Device and Patient Health Questionnaire. Firstly, these families were divided into two control and intervention groups (each of them included 10 families), then the dimensions of mental health of family were measured in both groups and finally, intervention group was placed under cognitive-behavioral interventions for 8 weeks. Descriptive and inferential statistics and SPSS 22 software were used to analyze the data. The results of the present study showed that after performing cognitivebehavioral intervention, significant difference was observed between the control and intervention groups in terms of general function of the family in the dimensions of problem-solving, emotional responsiveness, behavioral control. Also, significant difference was observed between the control and intervention groups in terms of mental health of patients with sickle cell disease (P<0.05). Cognitive-behavioral family therapy improves the general function of the family and increases the mental health and this indicates that in order to enhance the mental health in the families having children with sickle cell disease and/or other chronic diseases, health centers and systems should use psychotherapists in order to perform more cognitive-behavioral interventions.
