- Authors
Simpson, Peter
- Abstract
This paper is written to reassess Paul Fourdrinier as a creative talent and contributor to English artistic and architectural life.1 At the end of the 19th century, during which he was accidentally confused with a non-existent Peter or Pierre Fourdrinier, the Dictionary of National Biography included this entry: 'He was more frequently employed on architectural works, to which his mechanical style of engraving was well suited. '2 Little further research was undertaken on Fourdrinier's work and legacy until his biography was published in 2017, but we are now able to update this previous limited judgement on the extent of his achievements and influence.3 Fourdrinier is distinguished by his remarkable versatility, as is shown in his very intricate architectural pieces and his free-flowing artistic renderings, reminiscent of the style of his probable teacher, Bernard Picart. By reassembling his entire known oeuvre, samples of which are shown below, it has been possible to see and appreciate the breadth of his talent.
