- Abstract
The article presents a historical analysis and review of the growth of U.S. pension plans in the post World War II period. Life insurance company competitive disadvantages of lagging portfolio yields, investment income taxation, and inadequate equity facilities are discussed and compensation practices are described and analyzed. Group variable annuities are particularly explored, tracking their historical performance through the 1960s. Discussion is also given forecasting future balances of equity investment and fixed payment schemes for retirement insurance plans.
