- Abstract
This article discusses the intersection of data science and sustainable development, highlighting the potential for data science tools to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The article emphasizes the need for empirical evidence regarding the advantages of data science in sustainability, but also acknowledges the numerous cases where data science has been implemented to promote a transition towards a more sustainable economy. The article presents a special issue of Expert Systems that explores the application of data science methodologies to the concept of sustainability, with articles covering topics such as digital soil mapping, artificial intelligence governance, digital innovation in large corporations, sustainable supply chain design for electric vehicle battery production, quantum computing, and edge computing in professional farmer cultivation. The authors hope that this compilation of research will inspire further initiatives and collaboration between researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in the field of data science for sustainable development.
