- Abstract
The article discusses how aeronauts attempted to validate their profession via the use of balloons in military operations during the U.S. Civil War. It also briefly examines science and the military in the 19th century, the manned flight observations of scientist and philosopher Benjamin Franklin, and the proposals of aeronaut John Wise regarding the use of balloons in the Mexican-American War.
