- Title
The Pharisee and the Tax Collector: An Agonistic Story.
- Authors
Doran, Robert
- Abstract
This essay presents a discussion of the New Testament parable between the Pharisee and the tax collector in the gospel of Luke 18: 9-14. The author proposes to examine the nature of the story in light of the Jewish rabbinic literary device of mashal. The author analyzes the text of the story, the content of the prayers in the parable, the characterization of the tax collector, and asks the question of how the story works as a parable.
