- Abstract
Different species of peccaries (Tayassuidae) are recurrent in all Brazilian biomes, and have been documented as meat and raw material resources for tools in several indigenous societies. In Brazil, they are frequently identified in zooarchaeological assemblages dating from the early Holocene to the period of the first European invasions. Both species that occur in Brazil, Tayassu pecari and Pecari tajacu, served to the precolonial indigenous societies as economic resource. At the sambaqui Lagoa dos Freitas archaeological site, Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil, peccaries were the main hunting resources of terrestrial mammals identified in the faunal assemblage. Taphonomic information associated with the ecological and ethological characteristics of the the Tayassuidae suggest consumption patterns of these animals with the selection of protein-rich parts and possible capture of specimens by trapping techniques. The data presented here contribute to the knowledge of human relationships with the Tayassuidae, serving as a basis for comparisons with other regions and archaeological contexts.
