- Abstract
A new differential protection scheme based on Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) technique for transmission line equipped with series, shunt and series-shunt branches of UPFC (SSSC, STATCOM and UPFC) is presented in two paper set and this paper is part I of this set. In present paper, the principle of new differential protection scheme based on sequence components and transmission line distributed parameter model equations is derived. An index in terms of sequence components of the synchronized voltage and current phasors as fault detection of differential relay is defined. So the effect of line shunt capacitance is eliminated automatically. The performance of mentioned differential relay is studied on symmetrical and unsymmetrical fault conditions using the equivalent circuit of faulted transposed transmission line sequence networks. Analytical and simulation results shows the proposed protection scheme with high selectivity and security can provide very fast and accurate unit protection and also it has good respond in present the high fault resistances. This scheme can be develop for compensated transmission line easily and in part II of this paper, the effects of each series (SSSC), shunt (STATCOM) and series-shunt branches of UPFC are investigated analytically. The digital simulation is performed in the MATLAB/Simulink software environment using the Power System Blockset (PSB).
