- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to point to the pagan-Christian syncretism and survival of original pre-Christian concepts (cults) in the traditional culture of Slovakia, especially in its spiritual component. It presents selected superstitions closely related to belief in supernatural forces, beings and sacred (worshipped) objects, which persisted in Slovakia until the half of the 20th century. Their traces can be found in family, annual and work (peasant) customs, in folklore, folk fine arts and elsewhere. The paper does not give a detailed and exhaustive view of the observed issue, but in the context of the studied topic it briefly points to the archaic acts and rites connected with the residues of the pre-Christian Slavic cosmogony cycles, cult ceremonies to honor dead ancestors, agrarian cults and magic. It also provides a general definition of religious cult from the point of view of cultural/social anthropology and ethnology.
