- Abstract
The article describes the Northwest Lipid Research Clinic (NWLRC) Fat Intake Scale (FIS), a brief dietary questionnaire to screen and monitor dietary intake related to plasma cholesterol levels. The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel guidelines include recommendations for the widespread adoption of cholesterol-lowering diets. Therefore, there is a need to assess dietary patterns of individuals quickly and economically. The optimal instrument would be brief, self-administered, and hand-scored. It would provide a reliable and valid estimate of fat, saturated and cholesterol intake and could guide users in setting goals for achieving or maintaining cholesterol-lowering diets. The FIS was developed, whose eight-item questionnaire correlated with saturated fat intake in a sample of English men. In 1983, NWLRC dieticians adapted the items to reflect North American eating habits and load availability.
