- Abstract
Since the late fourteenth century, there has been a college in Bologna for Spanish students studying at the university. It was founded by Cardinal Gil Álvarez de Albornoz, Papal Legate responsible for the recapture of the Papal States and who entrusted the Spanish College to the Pope, and during its long history it has hosted a large number of major figures in Spanish letters. The reliance of the College on various privileges associated with the Catholic Church, however, contributed to its decline as of the late eighteenth century after the French Revolution and into nineteenth century with the creation of the Liberal State. Matters were made worse in 1855, when the Spanish Government decided to play an active role in managing the foundation and appointed as administrator Manuel Mariliani, a former Spanish subject and naturalized Italian, who was unable to take up his post, thus leaving the College's management, structure and staff in need of reform. Further conflict ensued between the Spanish Government and the new Kingdom of Italy in 1861, when the mayor of Bologna closed both College and foundation on the grounds that Bologna's membership of the Italian state made the Italian Government legitimate guardian of any institution formerly under papal authority, including Albornoz's foundation. The reform was enacted only after further delays, ensuring the survival of the Spanish College of Bologna until the present day.
