- Abstract
The article discusses teenagers' bedrooms in the late-20th-century U.S. According to the author, changes in family size, income, and the size of homes combined with developments in consumer culture and child development theory to popularize separate, personalized bedrooms for teenagers. It is suggested that teenagers' rooms became an important part of their maturation and identity. Details on the role of the home goods and electronics industries in teen consumer culture are presented. Other topics include privacy and teenage sexuality.
