Chaste Marriage, Sexual Desire, and Christian Martyrdom in La vie seinte Audrée.
- Authors
BLANTON, VIRGINIA
- Abstract
The article offers poetry criticism of the Anglo-Norman poem "La vie seinte Audrée (The Life of Saint Audrey)" by a woman who identified herself only as "Marie." It explores the themes of chaste marriage, sexual desire, and Christian martyrdom. According to the author, Marie used her poem as a way to situate Saint Audrey amongst the virgin martyrs, who were regarded as the most elite group of holy women.
