- Abstract
In the market of mobile phones, which has become compulsory, competition has increased and the efforts to raise consumption have gained importance. Within the market, rapid technological developments, product diversification, increase in the quality of the products, intense practices in terms of advertisements and promotions are remarkable. This atmosphere may cause the consumers behave irrationally and have a tendency towards the waste of resources. This study aims to determine the assessments of the university students who constitute an important consumer cluster, regarding their behaviors leading to waste in the preference and use of mobile phones. In this study, it has been found out that the average monthly income of the parents of the students, students' having a scholarship or credits, and their gender have effect on the perception of waste. Among the behaviors that the students describe as definite wastefulness comes predominantly the demand of expensive mobile phones by people who are unable to meet their basic needs. However, that the students use pre-paid mobile phone lines is a behavior that does not have any connection with wastefulness in any way. In addition, obtained data shows that students use SMS and MP3 listening the most among the current functions of mobile phones and that they almost never use such other functions as Wap, GPRS, MMS, and GPS (Navigation)
