- Authors
Stern, Norton B.; Kramer, William M.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the contributions of the Sephardic community to Jewish religious leadership in California. The founding president of the first Jewish organization called Ryhim Ahoovim in Stockton was Issachar Zachariah. His brother, Eleazar was a permanent trustee of the Shaar Hashamayim, a short-lived Sephardic congregation. Abraham Cohen Labatt was the founding president of the German-Alsatian Congregation Emanu-El, established in April 1851. The first organization of the Jews in Los Angeles called the Hebrew Benevolent Society of Los Angeles was founded with the help of Solomon N. Carvalho. In response to the recognition given by fellow Jews, the Sephardim rose to religious leadership. They mixed with and acted as liaisons for Jews of Eastern and Western European origin.
