- Abstract
Polygalacae with approximately 1,300 species, is nearly worldwide represented. It is among the most important families of the savannas of Roraima, which are considered the largest continuous area of savannas of the Brazilian Amazonia. However, taxonomic studies are scarce in this area. A taxonomic survey of Polygalaceae species was undertaken in a savanna area of Boa Vista, Roraima State. Field work was conducted to collect specimens as well as herbarium specimens from Roraima herbaria were analyzed. Excursions aiming to collect specimens and make a photograph registration of the taxa were performed from October 2006 to July 2008. All collected material was incorporated in the herbaria of Roraima State (MIRR and UFRR). The genera of Polygalaceae found in this study were Bredemeyera, Polygala and Securidaca. Polygala was the best represented genus, with ten species, while Bredemeyera and Securidaca were represented by one species each. Polygala species occur preferentially in savanna habitats, Bredemeyera in the transition between savanna and riparian forest and Securidaca was restricted to riparian forests. Identification keys, descriptions, illustrations and observations on the taxa were also provided.
