An analysis of storm Ophelia which struck Ireland on 16 October 2017.
- Abstract
Extra-tropical storm I Ophelia i (known as storm I Ophelia i ) was not the only tropical system to affect Ireland in the 2017/2018 windstorm season. However by 0500 utc, storm I Ophelia i began to affect the southwest with violent storm force 11 winds (on the Beaufort Scale) across parts of Counties Cork and Kerry in the far south and southwest of Ireland (Figure 7). In accordance with the storm naming convention adopted by Met Éireann and the Met Office at the time, named storms occurring in the vicinity of Ireland and the UK of tropical origin retain the name given by the NHC, hence it remained known as I Ophelia i .
