- Abstract
This article examines how the South Ossetian defeat put Saakashvili, who came to power as a result of the Rose Revolution in 2003, on the spot and how the Georgian leader managed to survive by changing the dynamics inside and outside to his advantage. The article draws attention to the fact that Saakashvili came to be viewed as a leader who failed to meet his promise of restoring territorial integrity and dragged his country to a war it was doomed to lose. It also explains how economic losses and destruction created by the war, the opposition attacks and loss of prestige in the West caused Saakashvili to have hard times. Following, the article sheds light on how these difficulties served to strengthen Saakashvili instead of destroying him. It is emphasized that since the Georgian society blamed Russia rather than Saakashvili for the war, it continued to support the Georgian leader. Moreover, it also argues that the Georgian society continued to back Saakashvili because of the improvement in the standard of living in the post-Rose Revolution period although the opposition tried to draw attention to the economic loses created by the war. The article also draws attention to the fact that since the Georgian opposition lacked a comprehensive program and approached Russia after the defeat, the Georgian people continued to support Saakashvili. Moreover, it is also emphasized that the West also preferred Saakashvili's for the opposition due to his pro-Western stance. As a concluding remark, the article argues that all these reasons served to the victory of Saakashvili in the local elections in May 2010 which took the form of parliamentary elections.
