- Abstract
Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is an important component of mechanical ventilation, especially in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Optimizing PEEP is crucial for lung protection and minimizing the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury. PEEP prevents alveolar collapse and reduces stress and strain on the lungs. The response to PEEP varies among patients, so it is important to assess individual lung recruitability. The application of PEEP can have a significant impact on clinical outcomes, and different methods can be used to optimize PEEP settings. However, there is no consensus on the best method, and integrating these objectives into clinical practice can be challenging.
