- Title
Meanwhile in Bern.
- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of the Carolina Tuscarora war between European settlers and Native Americans in 1711 upon the settlement of a Swiss colony in North Carolina. It also examines the decision of the government of Bern, Switzerland, to expel Mennonites in 1711 and the emigration efforts of Bern merchant Geörg Ritter. The article describes Ritter's prior business arrangements regarding colonization with Swiss explorers Frantz Ludwig Michel and Christoph von Graffenried, as well as Michel's influence in meetings between Pennsylvania founder William Penn and chiefs of the Conestoga Indians in June 1711 regarding white settlement in Pennsylvania.
